Buyer’s Guide

Before buying a skateboard for your child, you need to consider a few essential considerations.

Deck Size

One of the most important things to look for when buying a skateboard for kids is how large the deck is. Generally speaking, a full-size adult skateboard will measure around 31 inches. However, this might be too large for young children. So instead, you might want to go for a skateboard approximately 27 inches long or shorter.

Deck Material

The next thing you want to consider is what the deck is made out of. The best option will be natural maple wood. However, other types of real wood work well.

Some of the skateboards we reviewed are made of plastic composites. Although plastic is not bad, it will not give you the same performance as natural wood. That said, it will be a bit cheaper.

Look for high-quality trucks made of very durable steel, as they will take a lot of force and impact. Moreover, they should also be maneuverable, so your child can easily move from side to side.

The skateboard should have high-quality bearings. At the very least, these bearings should have an ABEC rating of 7, with anything over 7 being better. The higher that rating, the smoother the wheels will turn. A higher rating means greater smoothness and allows the wheels to roll longer with minimal propulsion.

Next, consider the wheels—what they’re made of, and the hardness rating. The harder the wheels, the less impact absorption they have; however, they will go faster and are better for tricks.

Therefore, harder wheels are better if you want a skateboard for the skate park. If you want a skateboard designed for cruising, softer wheels are better. On a side note, good skateboard wheels are generally going to be made out of polyurethane

Grip Tape

The skateboarding should have good grip tape on the deck for traction and stability. If there’s no grip tape, look for a board with a rough deck surface.

Although not a dealbreaker, the design is still essential,  especially for kids. Kids want their skateboards to be cool, colorful, flashy and reflect their interests.

What makes a skateboard ideal for children?

For kids, the main thing to look for is deck size. A children’s skateboard will usually be shorter and lighter than an adult skateboard. A length between 24 and 28 inches will usually be fine for kids.

What is the best material for a skateboard?

The best skateboard deck material is hard maple. Maple is exceptionally durable yet retains a good deal of flexibility for impact absorption.

Why does the ABEC rating matter?

This rating determines how hard the wheels are. These ratings can include 1, 3, 5, 7, and 9. The higher this rating, the tighter the tolerances are; this makes the bearing a more precision part. With small tolerances and high precision, the wheels can function at significantly higher RPMs; the higher the ABEC rating, the faster than wheels will turn.

What’s the difference between a cruiser and a skateboard?

Cruisers tend to be a bit shorter and narrower than regular skateboards. This is because they are designed for simply cruising and basic transportation. On the other hand, actual skateboards are designed more for tricks than anything else. As a result, skateboards are usually bent up at both sides, whereas cruisers may or may not feature a kicktail.

We think the best skateboard for kids is the Apollo Skateboard. It’s a good size, durable, has excellent features, and isn’t overpriced.
