Best Bikes for Family Rides: Reviews

Schwinn Network Adult Hybrid Bike

51+9Ezn8D8L. SL500

This is a relatively high-end bike from a famous brand name. While it may not be the most budget-friendly, it has many great features and is built to last. On a side note, this bicycle is available in various colors.

Review

This bicycle is technically designed for men. However, there is no reason why women couldn’t ride it. The most important thing to note is that this bike is designed for adults between 5’4″ to 6’2″. It comes with 700c wheels.

This bicycle also features lightweight yet durable alloy rims and wheels designed for road riding. You could also ride off-road with this bicycle if you want.

The bike frame is made of very strong yet lightweight alloy material. It’s light enough for a long day of flat surface riding with your family. However, it’s durable enough to handle quite a few bumps.

While it does not have any rear suspension, it does have a high-quality front suspension fork that allows for greater impact absorption. Therefore, those bumpy city streets won’t hurt your backside too much.

Moreover, it does have a bit of suspension in the seat itself. The seat comes with an integrated spring system to help absorb even more impact. The seat itself is also designed to be extremely comfortable. It features a lot of padding and is very wide. It’s one of the more comfortable bike seats I’ve seen.

This Schwinn bicycle also comes with ergonomic handles that are easy to hold for long periods. In addition, this is 21-speed bike has a very high-quality derailleur; 21 speeds make it ideal for most riding situations.

However, this bicycle comes with linear-pull brakes; they may not be as good as disc brakes, but they still get the job done just fine. They provide more than enough stopping power to keep you safe in all situations.

Pros

  • High quality and durable build
  • Lightweight frame
  • Good stopping power
  • 21 speeds for versatility
  • Comfortable grips
  • Very comfortable seat
  • Front fork and under-seat suspension

Cons

  • Could do with disc brakes
  • Not the most budget-friendly

sixthreezero Around The Block Women’s Beach Cruiser Bike

Here is a fantastic bike for moms and, well, all women. You might appreciate that it is available in 11 colors. I love the blue one!

Review

This bike has two sizes to choose from —a 24-inch model and a 26-inch model. Both sizes have an extremely durable steel frame. It’s a bicycle that can handle a lot of punishment.

It may not be the lightest bike, but it still has its benefits. For example, steel can absorb a bit of impact to keep you comfortable on bumpy roads. However, even though it has a steel frame, it’s not the heaviest bike around.

In addition, the extremely wide and ergonomic seat will help keep you comfortable. Not only is this seat wide, but it also has excellent padding. It also features an under-seat suspension system to help absorb even more impact for comfort.

The 2.125-inch wide aluminum wheels come with deep and soft waffle treads for excellent traction on most surfaces; they also help soften your ride.

Moreover, you get wide and ergonomically friendly handlebars combined with soft and comfortable grips. The shape of the handlebars allows for upright riding to help keep your back straight.

Now, something cool is that you can choose a 1-speed, 7-speed, or 21-speed model. For some family bike rides and simple cruising, we would go for the 1-speed model.

This bicycle comes with coaster brakes; to slow down on this bike, you just have to pedal backward. Of course, it is not ideal for excellent stopping power if you are riding at high speeds. You also get a rear rack for storage.

Pros

  • Looks nice + many colors to choose from
  • Two sizes available
  • Very durable steel frame – absorbs some impact
  • Under-seat suspension + well-padded seat
  • Rear rack for transportation
  • Great wheels and tires for smooth riding
  • Allows for comfortable upright riding

Cons

  • Only has coaster brakes
  • A bit on the heavy side

IDS Home unYOUsual U Transformer 20″ Folding City Bike

51P8iQcQI3L. SL500

This is the most unique option on our list because it is a small folding bicycle. It’s a very convenient bike that can easily be adjusted for size. Therefore, it’s ideal for fathers, mothers, and children alike. It’s something that works well in a small home.

Review

This is a very small 20-inch folding bicycle. Due to its small size, it is not recommended for adults to use for long-distance riding because it’s not the most efficient in terms of speed or distance in relation to the amount of energy you expend.

However, the convenient aspect is how small and portable this bike is. It’s something that you can easily fit into a cramped garage or a small apartment. This bike literally folds in half down the middle of the frame. Moreover, both the seat and handlebars can be folded down to create a compact package.

The seat and the handlebar are adjustable for size — you can have them really high or really low. So, this bicycle can be ideal for adults and children alike as it can be adjusted to suit more or less anyone.

In addition, the bike features a durable steel frame. The bike is highly durable, although the folding hinge is a bit of a weak point. The steel frame can handle some bumps and absorb a bit of impact. Although steel is usually not overly lightweight, this bike is pretty small, so it’s not that heavy.

Moreover, this bike has both front and rear linear-pull brakes for good stopping power and maneuverability. You also get a really wide and well-padded seat for comfort. This seat is ergonomically designed to keep your backside from becoming sore while riding.

The under-seat suspension system is a dual-spring system that can help absorb a good deal of impact. You also get relatively comfortable handles with cushioned grips.

However, this bike has small 20-inch tires; they’re 1.75 inches wide, not overly wide.

These wheels and tires are generally designed for city street riding. You also get a rear transportation rack to carry your most essential belongings.

Pros

  • Ideal for people of all sizes
  • Small and compact
  • Portable and easy to store
  • Lightweight
  • Comfortable to ride
  • Decent brakes
  • Transportation rack
  • Reasonable price

Cons

  • Might be too small for some
  • Not built for speed
  • Handlebars are a bit narrow

Huffy Kids Hardtail Mountain Bike

51FlY95tKvL. SL500

This mountain bike design is marketed for young boys; however, there is really no reason why girls couldn’t ride it. So let’s look closer to see what you get with this kid’s bicycle.

Review

One thing that stands out about this bicycle is that there are various colors and three sizes to choose from. This should make it ideal for children of all ages.

There is a model with 20-inch wheels and a 13-inch frame; one with 24-inch wheels and a 14-inch frame; and one with 26-inch wheels and a 17-inch frame. This means it should be ideal for children as young as 4 or 5, and as old as 13 or 14.

This bicycle has a steel frame. We like steel bicycle frames for kids as they are highly durable and absorb impact; steel is also slightly flexible. However, the bike is not overly lightweight due to this steel frame.

Your kids can choose between a 6-speed and a 21-speed model. But, for basic city riding, the 6-speed model would do just fine.

In addition, the bike has a high-quality Shimano reel derailleur that will enable your child to effectively and smoothly switch gears. This is also partly due to the micro-shift twist shifter featured on the handlebars. As a result, it’s effortless for your kids to turn. This bike should be ideal for all sorts of riding conditions.

Moreover, this bike has a relatively wide and well-padded seat to provide your child with some added comfort. It’s ergonomically designed to ensure a high level of comfort. This is also true of the well-padded handlebars.

The front suspension fork is high quality and designed to absorb impacts. We also like how the handlebars are raised. This allows your child to ride with a straight back, preventing back pain from occurring. The seat is also adjustable for height.

This bicycle has both front and rear linear brakes. They may not be as good as disc brakes, but they still work fine. They’re pretty durable and cost-effective as well.

The tires on this bike are 20 inches by 1.95 inches. They’re quite sizable, especially in terms of width. This should provide your child with a very stable platform to ride on. The tires have a very good tread pattern to allow fantastic grip on most terrains. In addition, the tires are also relatively soft and designed to absorb a good bit of impact.

Pros

  • Many colors and 3 sizes to choose from
  • Durable steel frame
  • Comfortable seat and handlebars
  • Ergonomic riding position
  • Nice wheels for most conditions
  • Good stopping power
  • High-quality components

Cons

  • A bit heavy
  • Assembly can be difficult

RoyalBaby Freestyle Kids Bike

51AG7IEFl6L. SL500

This is a small bike for children who are still learning to ride. It comes with detachable training wheels, so your child does not fall. In addition, you or your child can choose from seven really nice colors.

Review

This is a small bike for small children, designed for kids who are just learning how to ride; this is why it comes with training wheels. The wheels on this bike are 12 inches, so they are pretty small.

However, larger models are for sale, including 14-inch, 16-inch, 18-inch, and 20-inch models. The smaller 12-inch model is ideal for children between 2 and 4; the 14-inch model is for kids between 3 and, and the 20-inch model is for kids 13 to 15 years.

The smaller 14-inch model is what we are talking about right now. This is a single-speed bike. It doesn’t have any complicated gears that your child has to master, making it very easy for kids to ride. It goes fast enough for a child, even with a single speed.

In addition, the bike comes with reverse brakes to help your child slow down and stop. Unfortunately, there are no handlebar brakes — your child can slow down or stop simply by pushing backward on the pedals. However,  the 20-inch model does have dual handlebar brakes.

The wheels are wide and thick, durable pneumatic tires that can resist puncturing. They also have an excellent tread pattern to ensure your child has an excellent grip no matter the terrain. These tires are also relatively soft, so they can absorb a good deal of impact.

This bike also has an extensive and well-padded seat designed for comfort. This seat can be adjusted for height to suit your child as they grow. Another comfort factor is the handlebars that feature soft grips. This bike also has a convenient water bottle holder.

Pros

  • Ideal for young kids
  • Has detachable training wheels
  • Easy to maneuver and stop
  • Very safe
  • Designed with durability in mind
  • Comfortable
  • Affordable

Cons

  • No handlebar brakes
  • Only has a single speed

Buyer’s Guide

Before you shop for bicycles, there are a few important purchasing decisions to consider. Here are the most critical factors to look for before choosing any bike.

Size

One of the most important things is the size of the bicycle. Look at the size of the frame and the wheels in relation to you or your child’s size. This is especially important if you are buying a bicycle for a growing child.

Frame Material

Generally speaking, steel bicycle frames are the strongest, and aluminum or alloy frames are much lighter. However, steel tends to be more durable and absorb more impact than aluminum. This is a choice you’ll have to make.

Suspension

You want a bicycle that has a good suspension. At the very least, you want an easy front suspension fork to help absorb some bumps. You could also go for in-frame or under-seat suspension. A combination of front fork and under-seat suspension for city street riding is recommended.

The Seat

For comfort, you want a wide seat with good padding. Those skinny and narrow racing-style bicycle seats will not be comfortable for you or your kids to ride on. When it comes to your kids, the seat’s height should be adjustable.

Wheels and Tires

Wide tires are ideal in terms of stability, and they help absorb a good bit of impact as well. Also, look at the tread pattern; if you plan on going off-roading with your family, a deep tread pattern is preferable.

Gears and Shifters

A 21-speed bike is ideal if speed is a priority for you. However, many of the bikes I reviewed have a very limited number of speeds, with some having only a single speed. So for slow-paced family rides, you really don’t need that many speeds. If your bike allows you to shift gears, the shifter and derailleur should be high-quality.

The Brakes

Finally — the brakes. Generally speaking, disc brakes are the best, although also they are more expensive. However, for family riding, basic linear-pull brakes should work just fine.

Conclusion

If I had to choose a single model, it would be the Schwinn Network Adult Hybrid Bike. It’s a really nice bike for both men and women. In addition, if you are buying a bike for your kids, either of the children’s bikes reviewed would be ideal; it’s mostly a matter of the child’s age and feature preferences.
