Giving them outlets for their energy and strong emotions will be very important for them. You might notice they gravitate towards activities where they can use their strong observations and creative gifts. In this blog post, I will discuss 10 activities that may be perfect for your highly sensitive children!

HSC and Visual Art Activities

One activity that is perfect for highly sensitive children is art, such as painting, drawing or sculpting. They can even work with clay or play dough to form little critters, or even their favorite foods.

There are many benefits to visual art activities for highly sensitive children. Art can help them express their emotions, process difficult experiences, and communicate in a non-verbal way. It can also be a great outlet for their creativity. And it’s a calming activity that can help them enjoy being present and in the moment.

Here are some tips for visual art activities with your highly sensitive child:

-Create a calm and quiet environment where they can feel safe to explore and express themselves.

-Try not to worry too much about the mess because this may cause some tension in the environment. Just be sure to have them help you clean up afterwards!

-Provide them with child-friendly materials that they will enjoy working with, and you won’t mind cleaning up.

-Encourage them to take their time and not worry about finishing the project.

-Praise their efforts and encourage them to keep exploring their creativity.

HSC and Nature Activities

My son and I took a walk in the rain yesterday and a rainbow took us completely by surprise! You never know what nature has in store for you, when you least expect it.

-Encourage them to get dirty and don’t worry about them getting muddy or wet. This is all part of the fun!

HSC and Music Activities

Music is another excellent way for highly sensitive children to experience the world. Certain types of music may touch them emotionally in a way that is deeper and more profound than others.

Music can be a powerful tool for relaxation, stress relief, and emotional healing. It can also be a great way to connect with others and build relationships. They may even want to join the band in middle or high school, which is a great way to meet new friends!

-If they allow it, take your middle finger on both hands and place just in front of the tragus (the little bump in front of your ear). Put the thumb behind the earlobe and make 5 gentle circles. You will be amazed how calm it will make them feel.

The library is a great place for highly sensitive children. Many libraries have comfortable chairs and couches, as well as plenty of space to spread out. Encourage your child to explore the library and find books that they love.

They can also attend story times, which can be a great way for them to interact with other children their age. The librarians may even get to know your children by name over time, and help them find even more books that interest them. The library is quiet and low-key, and a great way to avoid the noise and commotion of a bookstore.

Make sure to visit the library often! Highly sensitive children will love having a place to escape and explore new worlds.

Here are some tips for reading with highly sensitive children who are younger:

-Help them choose books that are about topics that interest them.

-Watch out for content that is too violent, or age inappropriate. What might be fine for one child, may not be for your sensitive child.

-Find books with positive role models that they can relate to.

-Read together each day to bond and connect.

-Make sure they have a comfortable place to read, such as a cozy chair, fuzzy blanket or bean bag.

-Let them take breaks as needed and don’t force them to read if they are not in the mood.

-Encourage them to ask questions about the book and discuss their thoughts and feelings. Encouraging a love of reading will serve them very well long into adulthood!

HSC and Cooking

Many highly sensitive children are picky eaters. This can be a huge challenge for parents, but there are ways to get your child involved in the kitchen and exposed to new foods, even if they are picky.

Some ideas I have tried with my family:

-Give them some control and choice by letting them help you choose recipes that you make together.

-Encourage them to be creative and experiment with new flavors.

-If they are old enough, let them use a knife to chop vegetables (with supervision).

-Have them set the table or help with clean up.

-Talk about the different smells, textures, and colors of the food as you are cooking.

-Let them help you choose healthy foods to put in your grocery cart.

-Make sure to give them plenty of time to complete the task. Don’t rush them or get annoyed if they cause a spill.

Making meals together can be a great way to bond with your child, and get them interested in trying new foods. They will be exposed to a variety of foods in a way that may be less intimidating than at mealtime. It is also a great opportunity to teach them about nutrition and where food comes from.

HSC and Movies

Family movie night can be a great activity, but some movies can also be too emotional or upsetting for highly sensitive children. My sensitive daughter starting crying hysterically when she realized the parents went off on a ship never to return in the movie “Frozen”.

It is important to choose movies that are appropriate for their age and sensitivity level. It can be hard to tell which types of movies will affect your child. It’s best to avoid movies that are too violent or have graphic scenes. Instead, opt for family-friendly films that are lighthearted and have positive messages.

There are a lot of great movies out there that are perfect for highly sensitive children. Some of my favorites include movies like Studio Ghibli’s “My Neighbor Totoro” and “Ponyo”, which are perfect for highly sensitive children. They are gentle, charming, and have positive messages about the world and humanity. These films also help children understand and appreciate nature.

Other great movies for highly sensitive children include: “The Lion King”, “The Land Before Time”, “Beauty and the Beast”, “The Little Mermaid”, “Up”, and ” Toy Story”. These movies are all rated G or PG, and have themes of friendship, family, and adventure. They also contain no violence or graphic scenes.

Making movie night a special event is easy with these tips:

-Choose a movie that everyone will enjoy. It can be hard for everyone to agree at times, but this can be the perfect time for the family to practice the art of compromising!

-Make sure the environment is comfortable for everyone. This means having enough pillows and cozy blankets for everyone, and making sure the room is not too hot or cold.

-Prepare some tasty snacks that everyone will enjoy.

-If you have younger children, make sure to have some activities on hand to keep them occupied during the movie.

Sit back, relax, and enjoy the show!

HSC and Volunteering

Volunteering is a great way for highly sensitive children to use their empathic gifts to help others. Giving them this foundation as a child will encourage them to get involved in their community when they are an adult. It is also a great opportunity for them to learn new skills and make new friends.

There are many different ways for highly sensitive children to volunteer. They can help seniors at a nursing home, deliver meals to the elderly or disabled, help at a food bank or soup kitchen, or help out at a local animal shelter.

They can use their creative skills to make cheery cards for seniors or bake yummy goodies for a local soup kitchen. Getting your child’s opinion on how they can help will foster their self esteem.

Some of the best things about volunteering with your child include:
