Hidden Your Word in My Heart Craft
Are you familiar with Steve Green? He has a set of cds for kids that take Bible verses and put them to music. They are extremely “kiddy” but they are extremely useful for memorizing Scripture. I used to listen to them when I was young, and I can still sing most every song. One of them was about hiding God’s word in your heart, based on the following verse:
“I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you.” – Psalm 119:11
The song is catchy and very easy to learn. But I wanted to go a different kind of route for encouraging my kids to treasure God’s word and memorize it, so I made up this little craft.
Hidden Your Word in My Heart Craft
a crayon resist and watercolor creation
Materials
Watercolor paper (you can use other paper, but watercolor paper works really well for this)
Watercolors
White Crayon
Bible template
First, you need to cut the watercolor paper in the shape of a heart. I just freehanded a half a heart on some folded construction paper and then traced the whole heart shape on my watercolor paper.
Then you need to add the hidden part of this craft. You will do this before showing it to your kids. On a well lit window, tape up your Bible template. I just pulled one I liked from the internet. I’ll try to find it again, and post the link here. Then tape your heart over top of the template. You should be able to see the Bible through the paper.
Trace the Bible in white crayon, being sure to keep track of where you have been so you can make sure you get all the pieces. Be sure to press hard and make thick lines.
Now the heart is ready to give to your kids. From one angle, it will look like just a plain heart.
But we know what is hidden inside. (You can see the picture if you hold the paper at an angle.)
Your kids can discover what is hidden in the heart by painting over all the heart. The white crayon will resist the watercolors, and the Bible picture will pop out!
Then you can talk to your kids about the importance of hiding God’s word (the Bible) for real in our hearts.
Then you can sing the song (because, let’s face it, it was already running through your heads anyway!)
estoy muy agradecida por haber encontrado esta manualidad, realmente es asombrosa, diferente, Dios las bendiga
Thank you so much for this! I teach 4 and under in my Sunday School class. This week is Psalm 119 and this is perfect!
So glad it was helpful! 🙂
