Organizing Your Life in 2015: Bible Reading
There have been many 24 hour cycles during these past 365 days where I haven’t even cracked open the cover of my Bible. I had a lot of excuses, some of them fine, most of them not, but nevertheless, I’m here now, ready to start the new year with a commitment to read Scripture everyday.
I think that I’m probably not alone in my lack of Bible reading. We have a lot of reasons that fall across a big spectrum. Busyness. Lack of sleep. Inability to concentrate. Mad at God. Burnout on God. A deep wonder if God really even exists. No matter where you are, I invite you to read along with me in my personal project of Journeying through the Scriptures in 2015 (I know, creative title, but whatever. If you have a better one, I’m all ears).
The invitation is simple, really. Will you read along with me?
I’d like to read the Bible through in a year, using this plan, but really, you can do what you want. Read it chronically in a year? Read a different verse everyday? Read the same passage everyday? Whatever is the next step for you, let’s do it together.
As a caveat, let’s all agree that reading the Bible is no magic potion. It won’t make you happier. It won’t necessarily change your behaviors. It certainly won’t make God love you a single bit more. But, it will turn our hearts in the direction of God. It will train our minds to consider Christ as we live out each day. For me, it’s a way of opening up my heart and hands before God.
Because writing and doodling helps me to process and remember, I’m going to try and doodle everyday too as I read.
In case journaling is your thing too, I created a Pinterest board with some journaling ideas/inspirations/etc. Feel free to send me other pins you find along the way and I’ll post them to the board.
Also, if you want to get kids involved, here’s a plan for them too!
Finally, I’ve also created a Facebook group for those of us who are committed to reading together. It’s a place to share encouragement, questions, ideas, frustrations, insights, whatever!
