DIY Christmas Stocking
It’s that time of year to deck the halls, and so I’ve got an easy home decor project for you: DIY Christmas Stockings!
How easy is it? Well, let me just say that if I could do it, you can do it. You see, I had a reason to make stockings this year–we didn’t have enough! Yup, we just recently (read two weeks ago!) welcomed another little boy into our hearts and homes. Let me introduce my boy.
And so, even with a newborn, and two rambunctious older boys, I was still able to make these stockings. It took me a couple of days to get it completed, but these could reasonably be done in a couple of uninterrupted hours, depending on how many you need to make.
For this project, I wanted to go cheap (babies are big on the budget, am I right?), so I just used fabric that I had laying around my house. You can use whatever fabric you’d like for this project.
So first I sketched a stocking pattern on some scrap paper. If you don’t feel comfortable winging it, you can always trace an old stocking that you like the shape of. Then I cut that shape, and the reverse, out of my fabric.
Pin the right sides together and sew along the sides and bottom, leaving the top open.
Turn right side out and press the seams.
Then cut a rectangle out of you cuff fabric that is a little longer than the circumference of your stocking, meaning it will go all way around the top with a little overhang. Pin the right sides together and sew into a tube.
Fit the tube, still wrong side out, around the stocking base and pin around the top edge. Sew around the top.
Then pull the cuff tube right side out. Pin the top edge into a nice hem and sew. I also brought the bottom of the cuff down a little bit to create a bit of a lip of cuff at the bottom. Then I sewed around that.
Take a strip of your cuff material (as long as it won’t fray), and sew that to the back of the stocking.
Then hang and admire.
I didn’t take as many pictures as I thought I did, but here’s a great tutorial that I drew inspiration from, although I made mine a little simpler by not worrying about a lining and not hand-sewing anything.
I think I’ll embellish my stockings with some freezer paper stencil letters, or I might make stocking hangers. I haven’t decided yet. Maybe you can help!
