Support Local: Brilliant Sky Toys and Books (+Giveaway!)
Brilliant Sky Toys and Books is a toy store that has been around for quite some time. From locations in Iowa and Illinois to Texas and Georgia, these stores are locally owned and committed to providing quality toys that will contribute to the importance to PLAYING, something we obviously value here at Play Eat Grow.
While we know that play can happen with or without pre-made toys, we’re excited to share about the recipients of the 2014 Brilliance Award – an award that Brilliant Sky Toys and Books gives each year to their favorite toys based on playability and quality. Here’s their list for this year:
Squigz Starter Set (24 pieces): These baby friendly, but awesome for kids of all ages, squigz are a really cool building option! They stick together via suction, and your only limit is your imagination (okay, and gravity too). The 24 piece set is a great amount for one child, and decent set for two kids. Three or more trying to play at the same time equals not-so-fun, so just keep that in mind if you are deciding which pack to purchase.
Plus-Plus Mini Basic (480 pieces): I may not have ever told you all this, but my older kids aren’t so into Legos. They each have a couple sets that they like to put together, but it’s not an obsession for them like many kids their ages. These mini blocks, however, were a hit. Asante made a giraffe while Jake (ahem, big kid) made a pink elephant (of course he did). We played with the neon set (not the basic color set), so if you like the ones in our picture, be sure to grab the neon ones.
Lottie Dolls: These are 7 inch dolls that are little enough to carry with you anywhere, but big enough that you’re not losing her constantly :). We decided this girl needed to be outside because she looked totally ready for fall. The girls carried her many places this week, even to pick up the older ones from school.
We didn’t get a chance to play with the rest of the list, but we wanted to share them with you anyway, because they look like cool toys (you can check out this link to see them listed on their website). Birthday or holiday gifts anyone?! 🙂

If you live near one of their locations (I know some of you definitely do!) then stop in and mention you heard about them from us! Each store offers a variety of story times, crafts, play groups, etc. They are also the kind of toy store that you go to to try out new things- many of the stores have toys, games, etc. out so that your child can try them out to see what they think (Louisville friends- they have a dollhouse sitting out- the Hape one- go try it out and tell me what you think; I’m wooden dollhouse shopping and that one has made it to my top 3!) Anyway, it’s more than just a store but a part of the physical community in which it’s located. Love that.
Finally, Brilliant Sky Toys and Books is giving one of YOU a choice of one thing from the list! Leave a comment below, telling us which one you’d like and why. Winner will be chosen completely randomly on Wednesday, October 15th. And as always, if you share about this on FB or Twitter, add a separate comment for another chance to win!
