Magic Tree House Book Review: High Time for Heroes
So when I brought it home from the library, he was excited to dig in. Here are his thoughts:
Free Magic Tree House Curriculum: This is a website full of lesson plans, reading guides, a curriculum key (tying each book to common core standards), and more! Did I mention that it is all free. I wish I had known some of this before Asante had read through the series! How cool would it have been to make a journal to write about it along the way?
About.com has a big list of activities to go along with each book (#1-47).
The Official Magic Tree House website, where you child can take a quiz after each book they read, earning “stamps” in their passport. We found it helpful so that we could be sure that the kids were understanding what they read, at least at a basic level. The site has a section with games (that go along with the books), as well as a parents and teachers section. The parents section is pretty lame, so you’ll probably want to go to the teachers section if you want anything helpful.
Sturdy for Common Things has some ideas that are free (thank you!) surrounding some of the books. I searched her site for “Magic Tree House” and here’s what I found. While I was searching, I also got lost in her website for nearly an hour. Some great stuff there– so have fun with that! 🙂
You’ll find a million things you can buy, but if all else, read the book along with your child and search for activities surrounding the themes of the book. For example, I could work on a couple Florence Nightingale activities with Asante, even though they aren’t specific to the book. Now I’m all excited and will perhaps try to convince Asante to start reading through them again this summer with the rest of the family… 🙂
Hope this is helpful. And if you haven’t gotten into the Magic Tree House series, you must give it a whirl! We enjoyed getting the books on cd from the library so that we could all enjoy them together. Even Ada (then 2) would sit and listen while in the car. “Jack and Annie! More Jack and Annie!”
