The Olympics are Coming! Have an Opening Ceremonies Party!
Just last week I was bemoaning the fact that time passes so quickly. Now here I am again saying, “Weren’t the summer Olympics just a few months ago? It hasn’t really been two years, has it?” Well, it has been two years, and whether it’s skiing, skating, or hockey that gets you most excited, the Olympics is a great way to introduce your children to all sorts of things! Geography? Check! Sportsmanship? Check! Unfamiliar sports? Check (curling at 1:00am)! Importance of practicing? Check! During the last Olympics my kids quickly figured out that all the normal TV watching rules did not apply – as long as they were watching the Olympics! To kick off our two weeks of all things olympics, we had a special Opening Ceremonies Party. Here’s what we did to make it special!
We made our very own Olympic rings out of paper plates. The kids enjoyed painting the rings, and parading them around during our own opening ceremonies party.

We made Olympic torches out of paper towel rolls covered with tinfoil, and flame colored tissue paper. We talked about the tradition of the torch being carried all over the world and how it would feel to have the honor of carrying the torch for your country. We also had our very own torch passing relay during our opening ceremonies party.

Family Theme Days |
As I already mentioned, we started off our party by parading around the cul de sac with the the Olympic rings, and torches, followed up by a family relay race. Yes – the adults participated in this too – some with more enthusiasm than others 🙂
(My disclaimer for not having nice photos of these games – I wasn’t a blogger until two months after the summer Olympics! But to be honest we all looked like such fools I’m not sure I would post any photos regardless. That being said, we laughed a lot, so I think it was worth it.)
