Play: Decorating with Children
been enjoying our house the last couple of weeks. The Christmas decorations just cheer
everything up, and keep us cheered up as well.
This was the first year that I didn’t decorate everything except the tree while the kids
were sleeping, and we really had a great time working together. As soon as I started carrying boxes up from
the basement two little boys appeared at my side. “Oh Mommy, can we help you with anything?” they wanted to know. I thought about saying, “Sure, you can help
me with the laundry,” but I restrained myself and I enjoyed seeing them
put their own personal flare on the decorations.

I let each
child have a special Christmas nightlight for the month. This Christmas tree is one (also a good place
for the boys to be able to move ornaments around or put ornaments they
make). The Bible open to the Christmas
story was their idea. I think the day we
decorated they had about 5 Bibles placed carefully around, all open to
different parts of the Christmas story.
with a light inside makes a special nightlight too.
we put red bows all over our Christmas tree.
When my parents were first married they bought a big tree and didn’t
have enough ornaments to put on it, so they tied red bows on it to fill in the
blank spaces. They’ve put red bows on
the tree every year since, and I’m carrying on the tradition as well. I wonder if my boys will do the same.
I try to buy
the boys one new ornament each year. If
you’re in the market for decorations, it might be fun to let your children help
you pick something out. We were at a
garden center recently and spent a good half hour just walking around looking
at all the displays and decorations.
There are lots of great options here or here (UK).
When I set
up my little Christmas houses the boys had opinions about where the sledders, carolers,
and little trees should go. Everything
was fine and dandy until I turned around and there was a big inflatable snowman
in the yard!
